On the weekend of Feb. 3 to 5, the Summerland Jets U11 squad traveled to Trail for a three-day tournament.

The tournament featured five teams from Trail, Castlegar, Nelson Cranbrook and Spokane.

Opening games were on Friday and the Jets faced the Trail Knuckle Pucks team.

The Jets had Atticus Zaseybida Skinner in net and he lived up to his nickname of Showman, making some great saves.

The Jets were short-handed early in the contest but defense Emily Gutowski protected the Jets’ net.

The crowd much appreciated the good sportsmanship of Ben Schelter when he gave the hockey stick back to the player who had just tripped him. The selection of the MVP of the game was the easy choice of Skinner.

The Jets’ three stars were Jake Hagen, Gutowski and Schelter.

On Saturday, the Jets rotated their goaltenders and used Blake Shewchuk in net.

After winning their first game, the Jets were pumped up. Hagen and Harvey Barker swarmed around the Trail Ice Breakers’ net.

Without the constraints of being a goaltender, newly positioned left winger Skinner did some of his hip-hop moves to an appreciative hockey crowd.

Towards the end of the third period, there was frantic hockey with both teams exchanging goals. With 1:30 left in the game Gutowski scored to tie the game with her first goal of the season.

The Jets’ three stars were Gutowski, goaltender Shewchuk and Hagen.

The second game of Saturday featured the Jets against the Trail Spartans.

Hagen scored in the dying moments of the first period. His celebration included what has been called as his “Flamingo dance.” Callen Hantelmann set up Barker for a nice wrap-around goal.

Kenleigh Derry had another of her great games and was awarded the Jets MVP.

The Jets’ three stars were Kira Vancha, Hantelmann and Barker.

On Sunday, there was one final game of the tournament and for the second time the Jets faced the Trail Knuckle Pucks team.

Skinner was back in net for Summerland.

Once again, Hagen and Barker put a lot of pressure on the Trail goaltender early in the game. Hagen scored and again did his “flamingo cele.”

Towards the end of the First Period, Bryson Wu made a nice pass to Barker who shot on net and Hagen was there for the rebound.

The game featured another Vancha end-to-end rush up the ice, but this time the Trail goaltender came up big.

Another nice play was when Barker made a nice pass to Harbinson, who batted the puck in the net.

At the end of the game Harbinson was awarded the MVP.

Summerland’ three stars were Callan Hantelmann, Maria Jonson and Barker.

The Trail tournament was well run. There were 10 teams and almost all the games were close contests.
