Summerland minor hockey players had a busy weekend on the ice.

On Saturday, Jan. 21, several Summerland girls traveled to Penticton’s outdoor rink for a hockey jamboree.

The players were divided up into four teams of different colours.

Several girls had excellent games including Brodie Wilsner, goal scorer Malia Cox, London Minty, Joy Wu and Emma Clark. Summerland’s Emma Clark was one of the stars of the tournament. Emma is a swift skater and a hard-working back-checker.

Also on Jan. 21, the Summerland U9 Jets Blue were at the West Kelowna Hockey Centre, facing the West Kelowna 2 team.

In goal for Summerland was Owen Webster.

West Kelowna scoring threat Anjoe had many shots on net, but Webster stopped most of them.

The big story of the game was the play of Everett Mix. He seemed to be all over the ice, setting up plays and backchecking. The Jets’ play was elevated every time Mix was on the ice.

Rarely in minor hockey is a player awarded a penalty shot. Gibson Langlois was given that opportunity and he didn’t disappoint. He fired the puck into the left corner of the West Kelowna net.

The MVP was Mix. The three stars of the game were Brodie Marsh with his end to end rushes, Heath Skinner with two goals and Gabriel Boucher.

On the evening of Jan. 21, the Summerland Jets U11 Blue team faced Penticton’s Wolfpack.

In goal for the Wolfpack was Bennett Scramsted, while Atticus Skinner was in goal for Summerland.

Two of Penticton’s best players, Ben Smith and Lucas Kelley, had clear cut breakaways on Skinner and were denied goals.

One of the nicest goals of the game was a perfect pass from Emily Gutowski to Harvey Barker for an easy goal.

A highlight of the game was Penticton’s Emerson Robinson’s first goal of the season.

The MVP was speedy Wyatt Langlois and the three stars were Kira Vancha, Casey Harbinson and Jake Hagen.

On Jan. 22, the Summerland Jets U7 team faced the Penticton Predators at the Summerland Arena.

The Jets were badly outshot by the Predators but veteran goaltender Sam Bullen kept Summerland in the game.

The Penticton squad is made up of some skilled players. Nash Simmons opened the scoring for the Predators and later was the team’s goalie. Speedy Gavin Keith scored at least three goals and Justin Tait pocketed two goals.

Summerland’s Brodie Wilsner had another strong game for the Jets.

Wilkin Ward scored two goals against the Predators. Ward gave one of his goals to his older sister Loftlin and the second goal was given to Maisie Cox. She plays right defence for the Jets

This three-foot-eight, 40-pound defence player was acquired by the Jets earlier this season to beef up their blue line.

The MVP was Wilkin Ward. The three stars were Waylon Graham, London Minty and A.J. Douthwright.
