Dear Editor:

After hearing the news that the Summerland council will use the “wait and see” approach to local speed concerns on Victoria Road South, we are writing in concern for the local citizens and children.

The section of Victoria Road South from the Dale Meadows crosswalk to the crosswalk on Beavis Place should be noted as a school zone with appropriately marked school speed sensors.

The crosswalk at Beavis Place and Victoria Road South has recently been updated with a solar flashing light, however there should be attention drawn to the fact that it is used by so many attending Giant’s Head Elementary School.

Locals and council are aware that although the school is located on Prairie Valley Road, this section of Victoria Road is used by the students to access the school from the side.

There is a walkway directly into the school from Beavis Place and is frequented by approximately half the students.

At the very least, the town should consider the safety of our children.

There are currently no speed signs in any direction when exiting the roundabout at Prairie Valley Road and Victoria Road, except in downtown proper. Perhaps this too can be addressed by council as this was deemed at the last council meeting as something the town can do without involvement of other government agencies.

There should also be no need for a traffic study as that was completed in order for the roundabout to be built, and it is not a volume issue as much as a speeding issue by some that utilize this portion of the road as a personal race track.
