Residents of Victoria Road South have signed a petition asking for improvements to be made along the street.
At the Aug. 22 council meeting, Nancy Fontaine presented council with a petition containing 62 signatures from residents concerned about the street between Prairie Valley Road and Agur Street.

Fontaine is asking for changes to improve the safety, speed and noise level on a residential portion of the street. The speed limit on the street is 50 kilometres an hour, but she says traffic often moves considerably faster along the street.
“The frequency of noisy vehicles and excessive speed levels in this residential area is intolerable and a real concern for our public safety,” she said in a letter to council. “We, as a group, consider this to be a violation of our rights to enjoy living in this residential neighbourhood.”
Earlier this summer, Fontaine wrote a letter complaining about the excessive speed along the portion of the road beginning at the intersection with Prairie Valley Road and calling for efforts to slow down traffic.
She said vehicles have used a portion of the road as a raceway during the late evenings.
Fontaine suggested a weekly campaign of police presence in the area. Another suggestion was to install speed humps, and she said this has been done on a street in Kelowna and resulted in slower traffic movements.
Speed signs, such as those used in school zones, were suggested as a traffic calming measure. However, Bob Carter, a resident of the street, said the signs should be turned off after school hours, so people do not use them to see how fast they are driving.
Graham Statt, chief administrative officer for Summerland, said the municipality is able to set its own speed limits on municipal roads within the community, including on Victoria Road South.
