A group of students at Summerland Secondary School is learning about robotics through an extracurricular program this year.
The school is one of many in the province to take part in the VEX Robotics Competition, a worldwide program to teach robotics to students.
Nick Kast, the teacher in charge of the robotics program at the school, said students recently attended a competition at the B.C. Institute of Technology.
The robots, created by the students, had to perform a series of simple tasks.
Around 60 teams from B.C. and Washington participated at the competition. Summerland sent eight students, in a junior and senior team.
“It’s hands-on learning, which is really important,” he said. By building the robots, students learn mechanics, physics and programming skills. The success of the projects is based on how carefully the students input their data and commands.
