Local stories of discrimination, racism and oppression are being explored through art.
Vernon and District Immigrant and Community Services Society (VDICSS) is hosting an evening dedicated to honouring the transformative power of art in confronting systemic oppression Thursday, May 16, at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre.
The unique collection originates from a series of arts-centered workshops held in Vernon between September 2023 and March 2024.
These workshops focused on local stories of discrimination, racism, and oppression, recognizing the collective efforts of individuals coming together to share the complexities of our lived experiences.
“Our community is rich with diverse voices and experiences, yet systemic barriers continue to marginalize countless individuals,” said Martin Friedrich, VDICSS executive director. “Through this collaborative effort, we aim to amplify these voices, dismantle oppressive structures, and cultivate a community where everyone can truly belong and thrive.”
Alongside captivating performances and immersive installations, the evening will showcase works crafted by local creators and premiere a short documentary about the project.
Doors open at 6 p.m.
Guests are invited to experience the exhibits at their leisure throughout the evening.
Admission is free and includes entry to a raffle with art, products, and experiences from local businesses.
Snacks and refreshments will be available.
“This event represents a significant step towards fostering inclusivity, understanding, and social change within the community,” added Friedrich.
“By harnessing the power of art to confront systemic oppression, participants are creatively paving the way for a more equitable and compassionate society.”
