The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is continuing the public engagement process for its 2022 budget.

This year, capital and operating expenses are divided into two separate budgets. This is a new step to ensure operating expenses are consistent.

The first reading of the budget was on Jan. 6, and the second reading is scheduled for the Feb. 17 regional district board meeting.

According to the preliminary budget, total taxation requests for 2022 are $22,162,567. This is nearly $1.7 million higher than the 2021 budget and represents an increase of 8.27 per cent.

Detailed draft budgets for electoral areas, municipalities and the Penticton Indian Band can be seen online at the regional district’s Regional Connections at rdosregionalconnections.ca/rdos-budget-2022.

The public engagement process will continue until Feb. 10, but because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, in-person presentations are not scheduled. Video presentations can be seen online on the regional district’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/c/RegionalDistrictOkanaganSimilkameenRDOS.

Jim Zaffino, manager of finance for the regional district, introduced a recommendation to the board that no capital projects are to be funded directly from taxes.

Under provincial legislation, the regional district’s budget bylaw must be adopted by March 31.
