The Summerland Pickleball Club is hoping to get more playing space in the coming year.

The club has around 130 members and plays at three gyms and at public courts at the Peach Orchard Campground in Summerland. But Henry Sielmann, president of the club, is asking for additional courts.

In 2020, the construction of four outdoor courts was planned, but the construction was deferred due to the COVID-19 budget cutbacks.

Sielmann said the club has committed at least $5,000 towards the construction of the courts.

An existing tennis court area would be used for the four courts. Preparing the area would include surface repairs and repainting.

“We have long outgrown the two courts built in 2017,” Sielmann said in a letter to the municipality of Summerland. “We wish to confirm our need for six outdoor courts (two existing and four new) based on the design developed last spring.”

The courts and other municipal funding decisions will be determined as Summerland council works on the 2021 municipality budget.
