The Penticton Vees have added some Western Hockey League pedigree to its roster.

Mason Dunsford is the newest member of the Vees (17-2-0-0) after the team announced the signing of the 19-year old goaltender late Monday afternoon.

Dunsford’s arrival to the team comes as a surprise after it was revealed that backup goaltender Colin Purcell has been dealing with an illness.

“Unfortunately, Colin Purcell has had a health issue that we are hopeful he can overcome soon,” said Fred Harbinson, the team’s head coach, general manager and president. “In saying that, we have the opportunity to add another talented goaltender in Mason Dunsford.”

Dunsford has been added to the team’s roster for the remainder of the 2021-2022 season, with Harbinson saying that the team will carry three goaltenders.

The goaltender comes to Penticton after playing parts of the last three seasons in the WHL, appearing in 23 games and posting three wins.

Dunsford split time with the Seattle Thunderbirds and the Tri-City Americans during his WHL career.

“The Vees would like to welcome Mason and his family to the Vees organization, City of Penticton and the South Okanagan,” the team said in a statement.

Dunsford is joining a club that has won nine consecutive games, as well as one that ranks among the league’s best in both most offensive and defensive team categories.

Penticton is slated to play the Merritt Centennials on Tuesday night at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena, with the opening faceoff set for 7 p.m.
