Okanagan Granfondo in Penticton sells out

A record 3,000 cyclists from across North America will take part in the July 10 event

The Okanagan Granfondo has sold out with a record 3,000 cyclists registering for the July 10 event through the South Okanagan.

According to Granfondo organizers, the race starts and ends in downtown Penticton and will see cyclists from around North America participate.

Granfondo had to cancel the race last summer because of COVID restrictions.

Following the provincial health announcement Aug. 20, 2021 which included further travel restrictions across the Interior region, Granfondo said they were left with no choice but to cancel.

“We were hopeful that the 2021 event would be a celebration of our progress along the road to recovery,” the Granfondo team said in a Facebook post.

All entries from last year’s Granfondo were rolled over to the 2022 event with no penalty.

The cancellation of Granfondo came around the same time Penticton’s Ironman triathlon and the Dragon Boat Festival announced cancellations as well.

The last time Granfondo came through Penticton was 2019 with 2,500 cyclists gathering at the Main Street start line.

Cyclists can choose from one of four distances with each distance starting and finishing in downtown Penticton. The event has three days of activities with pre-and-post events.
