While the Stanley Cup annually recognizes the best professional hockey team, the Allan Cup recognizes the best amateur hockey team.
The cup was donated by Sir H. Montegu Allan in 1909.
He was a Montreal businessman and president of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association.
Trustees administer these athletic cups. The first Allan Cup’s trustees were Dr. H.B. Yates ( McGill) , George Drinkwater and Sir Edward Clouston.
Clouston played in the first organized hockey game in Montreal on March 3, 1875. He was the national general manager of the Bank of Montreal and one of Summerland’s millionaires.
His orchard home still exists in Summerland, on South Victoria Road, just south of the original West Summerland train station.
The importance of senior amateur teams has diminished over time but the Allan Cup is still an important part of hockey history. The Allan Cup can now be seen at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. A replica of the cup is still used in amateur hockey.
