Girls host softball tournaments

Summerland Girls Softball hosted the last of the tournaments on the weekend at Dale Meadows Sports Complex.

From April 30 to May 1, the team hosted six bantam and six squirt teams from Port Coquitlam, West Kootenay, Castlegar, Kelowna, Cawston, Vernon and West Kelowna.

The Summerland teams played well but did not finish in the top four.

Cawston Kobua Koyotes won the squirt side of the tournament over Port Coquitlam.

This past weekend, even though the weather was not the greatest, 20 teams were in Summerland for a tournament.

There were 10 midget U16 and 10 peewee U12 teams.

Summerland Days Inn Scorch started by losing to Fleetwood and North Langley. They they played Kelowna at 3 p.m. on Saturday, only to be stopped because of the rain.

The game was restarted at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday morning and ended in a 14-14 tie.

The last game was against Langley, which resulted in another loss.

The midget final was between Ladner and North Langley, with Ladner winning 8-6 in a seven-inning game.

While the midgets were playing, so were the peewee U12 girls.

Summerland Sunview, coached by Jacquie Foley and Darryn McCullough, played well and worked hard but did not win a game this weekend.

Summerland Sunview Hustlers started out with a win over West Kootenay on Saturday morning.

The team had the Saturday afternoon game stopped because of the rain and ended it on Sunday morning with an 8-3 loss.

The final game of the round robin was a 10-8 win over Naramata.

The team ended fifth in the standings.

The final for the U12 teams was between Castlegar and Kelowna, which went five innings with Castlegar winning.

Thanks to the Summerland Recreation Department and the entire volunteer group for a great weekend, even with weather delays.
