On March 1, the Summerlan branch of the Okanagan Regional Library started The Young Adult Amazingly Spectacular Subscription (YAASS) Box, for youths between the ages of 12 and 18.

A new and exciting program at the library is going to have the teens of Summerland shouting YAASS!

On March 1, the Summerland library started The Young Adult Amazingly Spectacular Subscription (YAASS) Box.

The concept behind the YAASS box is similar to a box like FabFitFun or LootCrate, except you only need to pull out your library card and not your credit card. Plus there are books, so what’s not to love!

Youths between the ages of 12 to 18 can register for the exclusive box, and it’s important to be quick because there’s only a limited number of these coveted spots. There will be a group of registrants starting March 1, April 1 and May 1 for a total of three groups. The month of registration will be the first month that group will receive their subscription box and then will receive another box every three months until December. Therefore, teens registered in March, will receive boxes in March, June and September.

Upon signing up for The YAASS Box, the teen will receive an email containing a link to a survey. They must complete the survey to receive the box, as it asks questions about their reading preferences, favourite genres, hobbies, fandoms etc. in order for the librarian to get to know the teen a bit better.

The librarian curating the box then takes the survey information and selects library books and/or magazines that align with the teens preferences. The goal is to find something that they haven’t read yet, and maybe open them up to a new series or author they would not have explored on their own.

Once the books are chosen, we add some extra goodies into the box, such as treats, keychains, stickers, notepads, pen and so much more. These are gifts for the teens to keep and enjoy. The books however, need to be returned to the library.

Lastly, there is a review sheet in each box, where the teen can rate the books chosen for them, and give information on what they would like to see in the next box and what they would like to see at the library in general.

The library has a beautiful teen area, with couches and fluffy pillows, big windows, a private study room and a newly added internet station. We would love to invite teens to come check us out, take a load off and relax with a great book. If you ever need a suggestion, the librarians know all the best reads.
