Bike lanes were needed

Dear Editor:

I wish to comment on last week’s article “Road upgrade work finished” (May 26.)

The article stated that our road improvements included bike lanes. This is not correct.

These roadways are far too narrow to allow bike lanes.

The road width in front of both the secondary school and the Anglican Church is 4.2 metres.

The minimum recommended width of a bike lane is 1.5 metres.

That leaves 2.7 metres total road width for vehicle traffic.

A Blue Bird school bus has a width of 2.43 meters (excluding mirrors.)

No margin of safety.

This is quite remarkable for a downtown road design in the year 2011.
