A candidate unopposed

Summerland Mayor Janice Perrino unopposed acclamation election nominations nominees

Candidates in municipal elections seldom get in by acclamation, particularly in places such as Summerland, where many are passionate about local politics.

On Friday, when the nominations closed, Mayor Janice Perrino was declared mayor by acclamation.

This is a change from previous elections where at least two or three candidates had run for the mayor’s role.

While some are disappointed by the outcome, the simple fact is no other candidates came forward.

According to provincial statistics, there are close to 8,300 eligible voters in Summerland. Any of these could have filed nomination papers. And, as has happened in other communities, an out-of-town candidate could have entered as well.

Among the councillor candidates, only 10 people will be on the ballot for six positions. This is the smallest list of candidates since the 1996 municipal election when seven people were in the running.

Throughout Perrino’s term as mayor, some have been quick to criticize statements and decisions made by her and others on the council. The criticisms are important in any democracy and we urge people to speak out if they disagree with a decision or have concerns about a direction council is considering.

It is admittedly much more difficult to run for office or to hold the role of mayor than it is to raise concerns or speak out against a decision.

At the same time, we now wonder how serious the criticisms have been. Otherwise, someone else would have filed nomination papers.

The mayor’s voice is only one of seven on council. The other six seats have not yet been determined.

Please take the time to learn about the candidates and then vote in the Nov. 19 election.

Local government cannot work unless the people take a role in it.
