Joseph LALONDE

August 18, 2008

LaLonde, Joseph Aldeo Augustin Passed away on Monday, August 18th, 2008, 3 weeks short of his 90th birthday. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by May, his wife of 55 years, children Rick (Shannon), Carole, Alvin (Donna) and Lillian (Harvey), 8 grandchildren, 2 adopted great grandchildren, brother Sylvio (Mary), two brother-in-laws Roy (Jean), David (Donna) and sister-in-laws: June, Gloria & Ivy. Aldeo was a favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews. Aldeo was born in a rural French community (St. Brieux) in Saskatchewan on September 6th, 1918 and moved to Bjorkdale where he finished school and worked at various labor jobs including cutting cordwood until 1941 when he joined the Canadian Army. He served for 5 years in Europe with the 14 th Canadian Hussars (8th Recce) where lifelong bonds were formed and spoke often and fondly of his experiences. Following the army discharge Aldeo took up farming near Bjorkdale, SK; married May (nee Beeching) and raised four children. He loved the farm, the animals and the lifestyle – even towing many fools out of the ditch or the mud. He participated in many church activities, supported the curling rink and was a long-term member of the Legion. Fond memories were made during the annual family camping trip and visiting extended family. Aldeo moved his family to Summerland in 1974 were he owned an orchard and the auto wreckers. After retirement, Aldeo enjoyed assisting “the kids” as they established their homes, was the favorite babysitter for the grandchildren providing hours of entertainment. He loved reading, history, and was an armchair coach to many televised curling events. Aldeo was an avid card player and gardener and will be remembered for his sense of humor and spontaneity but mostly for his love for family and friends. A celebration of Aldeo’s life will take place at 1:30 pm on Saturday, August 23 rd at Summerland United Church. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Legion Poppy Fund and the Summerland Public Library.
