Born in Manimala, Kerala, India, James, age 17, left home for undergraduate education in Germany. Subsequently, he took advanced education in Italy. During this time, he learned and became proficient in several languages. After returning to India, he worked to further education and help to alleviate the difficulties, medical and social, of those less privileged. He was instrumental in the building of The John Wagner Memorial School in Maharastra State.

He is survived by his wife Anne; daughter Lisa Claire and son Jacob; stepchildren Alan (Patricia) Park and their children in Summerland and Katherine (Ian) Sigurdsson and their children in North Vancouver; three brothers and two sisters in India, their spouses and children; and many nieces and nephews around the world.
