Henri Theophile Frioud

September 20, 1935 - June 24, 2022
Born Sept. 20, 1935, in L'Abbaye, Switzerland. Died June 24, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.
Henri was the first child of Louis and Estelle Frioud and grew up with his sisters, Loulette and Malou in the beautiful Vallee de Joux, Canton Vaud, Switzerland.
A child of WWII, he enjoyed school and helped the family by herding cows in the summer. In the winter, he could be found hiking up and skiing down the valley slopes.
At 15, he apprenticed as a pastry chef in Lausanne. After his military service he travelled to England seeking adventure and then on to Canada, where he worked various jobs around B.C. and attended the Vancouver School of Art.
It was during this period that he met his wife, Heidi, who encouraged him to attend UBC and become a teacher. They started their family in West Vancouver and in 1965, Henri and Heidi moved to Summerland where Henri taught Art and French at Summerland Secondary School for almost 30 years, touching the lives of many who grew up in this community.
Henri and Heidi built their home on Walters Road in 1965. Henri's beautiful garden was his life's work. He created extensive stonework, a bountiful vegetable and fruit garden, and took great pleasure in tending it all year round until his last days.
Henri loved the Okanagan. He skied with impeccable style at Apex Mountain, biweekly in his retirement with a great group of friends. He was an avid sailor and member of the Summerland Yacht Club for many years.
He read widely in several languages, embracing history, philosophy, politics and fiction. He was an excellent cook and enjoyed experimenting with new recipes.
Henri was predeceased by his wife Heidi, who he cared for with devotion during her illness.
He is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by his three children Jackie (Mark), Pierre (Meena) and Stephanie, grandchildren Sophie (Kane), Kieran (Allie), Anita and Devin, his sisters Loulette and Malou, and his nieces and nephews, and by his loving friend Carmen.
We want to thank his caregivers for their kind support over the last few months, and his neighbours and friends for their kindness and generosity over the years.
A celebration of Henri's life will be held August 20th, 2022 at 6:30, 21606 Bridgeman Road, Summerland BC.
