A keen sportswoman her entire life, there wasn't an activity available in sports-mad, pre-war Kirkland Lake that Gunny didn't try and usually excel. She gained her nickname as a teenager with all-star play on the "gunny sack" at 3rd base; joining her teammates to twice represent Kirkland Lake at the Ontario Senior Women's fastpitch championships. Honoured as a life member of Ottawa's RCMP Curling Club in 2002, Gunny enjoyed curling and golf well into her eighties. Her lifelong love for sport was shared by her adoring husband Harry (2017, Summerland BC) and passed to her three heartbroken children; Beverly (Henk), Brian (Karin), Bob (Tina), eight grandchildren and a flourishing brood of great-grandkids. As busy as life and activities may have been, family always came first for Gunny. As patient and giving as a saint she was tiger-fierce in the face of any threat to a loved one. More often than not though, she would "kill them with kindness". Gunny passed away peacefully in Summerland, BC, just shy of her 93rd birthday.
