Dec 12, 1926 - Mar 7, 2018
Amy "Betty" Elizabeth Barnes, 91, of Summerland, BC, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2018 at her home surrounded by the love and support of her family.

Betty was born on December 12, 1926 in Northallerton, Yorkshire, England to Herbert and Sarah Carter where she grew up with her 8 brothers. During WWII, at a local dance, she met Alex Barnes, a Canadian Soldier whom she married on July 19, 1945. After the war, Betty immigrated to Canada and settled in Jasper Place, Alberta, where Betty and Alex started a family. They eventually moved to Mayfield because the house was getting too small. In the mid-70's they moved to Spruce Grove, AB where they owned and operated a ceramic shop until they retired.  In 1993 they settled in Summerland, BC and lived out the last of their days together.

Betty was always an active person. She would volunteer to help wherever she was needed through the local church, Spruce Grove and Summerland Senior Centres, and with many other organizations. It did not matter the cause, she always wanted to keep herself busy and give back to the community.  Out in her workshop, you could always find her creating something beautiful -  sewing, painting, quilting, knitting, weaving - she was never afraid to try something new. Above all, Betty loved her home and family and wanted to spend her last days there.

Surviving Betty are her children Nancy Dixson, Dennis (Janet) Barnes, Sheila (Wayne) Robertson/Blashill, Geoff (Judy) Barnes and Judy (Shaun) Reimer.

She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Betty was predeceased by her husband Alex Barnes of 63 years, grandson Wesley Barnes, son-in-law Don Dixson, and her 8 brothers.

Public Viewing will be at 7:30 pm on March 16, 2018 at Providence's Summerland Chapel, 13205 Rosedale Ave, Summerland, BC.

Betty's Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on March 17, 2018 at the Alliance Church, 14820 Victoria Rd. N, Summerland, BC.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Summerland Alliance Church in memory of Betty Barnes to aid in the building of Affordable Housing for the Summerland Community.
