Summerland sets record in 2021 for value of building permits

Total of 203 permits issued with value above $59M

It was a busy year for construction in Summerland in 2021, with a record set in the value of the new construction.

Throughout the year, 203 building permits were issued, with a total value of $59,775,300. This is a record year for Summerland.

While more building permits were issued in 2018 and 2019, the value in 2021 was much greater. The second-highest value of building permits was in 2019, when the 206 permits issued that year had a total value of $45,879,300.

In 2021, a single building permit issued in August accounted for much of the year’s building permit dollar value. The permit, issued for the Oasis development on Lakeshore Drive, came in at $23,582,000. This is for a three-building mixed-use residential-commercial development at the lakeshore.

The permits issued in 2021 included 115 housing units, with 41 single-family dwellings and 62 multiple-family residential units. In addition, there were five permits for carriage homes, five permits for secondary suites, six permits for multiple family residential buildings and two permits for mobile or manufactured homes.

One new commercial building permit was issued, along with 12 permits for commercial renovations and additions.

Two permits for farmworker accommodation building permits and seven permits for agricultural buildings were issued.

In a report to council, Brad Dollevoet, director of development services for Summerland, said the number of permits issued is similar to previous years.

“Reviewing the long-run trend for both the number of permits and construction value demonstrates the growth pattern that has been occurring in the district for the past four years, as building permits have been consistently over the 200 permits issued mar and construction has seen substantial increases in recent years,” the report stated.

While single-family homes made up the greatest number of building permits, there has also been an increase in multiple-family housing construction in recent years.

Multi-family units were identified in the “Affordable Summerland” Affordable Housing Strategy, completed in 2017.
