Students at Summerland Secondary School collected more than 200 kilograms of used batteries for the Me to We Club’s battery drive.
The batteries included one kilogram of small watch and camera batteries, 39 kilograms of D batteries, 16 kilograms of C batteries, 47 kilograms of AAA batteries and 231 kilograms of AA batteries.
The battery drive was held Jan. 10 to 24 through the Zinc Saves Lives Battery Recycling Campaign.
For every battery recycled, Teck, a Canadian mining company is donating the equivalent value of zinc recycled to the WE Charity, for the WE zinc and health program in villages in Kenya.
Organizers said the zinc in one AA battery could save the lives of six children.
