PHOTO SUBMITTED BRIDGE HISTORY Joe Smuin discussed the history of the Trout Creek Trestle Bridge at a presentation on Saturday. The bridge, used by the Kettle Valley Steam Railway, will soon need maintenance work.

The Summerland Heritage Advisory Commission, Summerland Museum and the Service Station in Summerland collaborated in offering a presentation by Joe Smuin on the history of the Kettle Valley Railway and in particular the Trout Creek Trestle Bridge.

This event was one of the many put on by the Historical Society as part of Heritage Week in Summerland. Around 100 people attended.

The presentation was offered on a donation basis with proceeds going to the Kettle Valley Railway Society fundraising for a major maintenance effort which will soon be required to keep the Trout Creek Bridge in service for both railway and general recreational use.

Smuin presented a slide show and commentary of the history of the “infinitesimal bridge,” its construction and the years of operation of the railway over the bridge in the 1915 to 1985 timeframe.

Smuin is a son, grandson and nephew of KVR pioneers who started his own railway career in Penticton, and a historian and archivist.

Members of the Kettle Valley Steam Railway were in attendance to welcome new members to the society and receive donations from those who wished to support the society and its railway.
