Summerland school trustees Linda Van Alphen and Linda Beaven have their work cut out for them in the coming year.
Each of them was appointed to a number of posts and committees when the board of School District 67 Okanagan Skaha held its inaugural and regular meetings this month.
Incumbent Van Alphen and newcomer Beaven were elected in the November civic election. At the inaugural meeting of the board Dec. 5, they were sworn in along with trustees Shelley Clarke, Walter Huebert, Bruce Johnson, Ginny Manning and Tracy St. Claire.
Also at the inaugural meeting, Van Alphen was elected vice-chair of the board and Manning was elected chair. Both have held these respective offices for the past three years. Van Alphen was again elected as the board’s representative to the BC Public School Employers Association, a job she has had for the past year. St. Claire, who has a background in negotiation and mediation, was chosen as alternate. Clarke was elected as a B.C. School Trustees Association councillor, with Van Alphen as her alternate.
At the regular meeting of the board Dec. 12, the chairman made the standing committee appointments for the coming year. They are Huebert for Buildings, Grounds, Safety and Transportation, Johnson for Education, St. Claire for Finance and Management and Clarke for Policy.
Beaven was appointed to the Summerland Recreation Committee, the Summerland and District Funding Foundation and the Child and Youth Committee of Summerland.
Van Alphen was named to the Summerland Advisory Planning Committee as well as the district’s Aboriginal Education Planning Council. Van Alphen was appointed to represent the board at the District Parent Advisory Council meeting Feb. 22 at Summerland Middle School and Linda Beaven will attend the DPAC meeting April 25 at the same location.
