Public hearing on controversial Penticton Lakeshore Drive development

The development has 75 pages of correspondence already

Penticton residents will have a chance to weigh in in person on a contentious development proposed for Lakeshore Drive.

The city has already received 75 pages of correspondence on the proposed eight-unit four-storey building at 602 Lakeshore Drive.

The developer is looking to get both a zoning change from small-lot residential to medium-density multiple housing, as well as variances for the minimum yard size between buildings and the maximum lot coverage for the building.

Ahead of the 6 p.m. public hearing feedback has already been filed and is mixed in the responses from residents both near and far from the development.

Many residents expressed their concerns about the look of the development as yet another ‘little box’, as well as the erosion of further heritage buildings along Lakeshore Drive.

Other residents were fully in support of the development, writing in their support of the development increase to the densification of the neighbourhood, as well as the modern addition the building would bring to Lakeshore Drive.

The public hearing will be held in-person at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre starting at 6 p.m. Residents can also participate via telephone or Zoom by following the instructions on www.penticton.ca/city-hall/city-council/council-meetings/public-hearings.

The application for the rezoning from Meiklejohn Architectural Design Studio noted that they had not received any feedback on the project from the Museum and Heritage Advisory Committee.
