Cyclist arrested

Midnight Tuesday (April 16), an officer was on routine patrol in downtown Trail when he observed a man riding a bicycle, without a helmet or reflectors, into oncoming traffic on Pine Avenue.

After watching the cyclist ride through a red light at the intersection, the officer decided to detain him roadside.

The officer activated his emergency lights and sirens; however, the cyclist continued peddling.

The man rode onto a sidewalk and attempted to ride away from the officer, but crashed his bike.

The officer exited his vehicle and approached the man while identifying himself.

The cyclist, disoriented from the crash, attempted to get onto his bicycle and ride away.

The officer prevented the man from leaving and arrested him for obstructing a police officer. A struggle allegedly ensued, and with the assistance of a second officer, they managed to take the man into custody without further incident.

The officers discovered that the Trail man, 31, had an outstanding warrant of arrest. Officers also located a small amount of a substance suspected to be an illicit drug.

The man remains in police custody at the Trail detachment and is awaiting a bail hearing before a judge.
