Crosswalk to be examined

Municipal council will ask ICBC to review a crosswalk proposal for Main Street and Rosedale Avenue.

Municipal council will ask ICBC to review a crosswalk proposal for Main Street and Rosedale Avenue.

Mayor Janice Perrino said the request was made because of comments from people who want a crosswalk directly from the end of Main Street to the medical building across the street. Earlier, a crosswalk was in place at that intersection, but ICBC officials said it was not safe.

Because there is a gentle hill on Rosedale Avenue between Jubilee Road and Wharton Street, visibility is poor at the intersection of Main Street and Rosedale Avenue.

Last year, when road improvements were done on Rosedale Avenue and Prairie Valley Road, two crosswalks were installed nearby, one at the roundabout and one at Angus Street.

Both offer much greater visibility than the older crosswalk.

“The two crosswalks we’ve got are placed for the greatest amount of safety, but they’re not convenient,” Perrino said.

She added that people are jaywalking at Main Street and Rosedale Avenue rather than walking an additional half block in either direction to the crosswalks.
