Steps are being taken in Summerland to reduce the risk of uncontrolled wildfires, through controlled burning.
The controlled burning, or wildland fuel modification, is set to take place soon on municipal lands east of Sunset Place near the Deer Ridge subdivision.
Materials burned will include waste wood debris piles, and crews explained burning will take place only on days when the ventilation index is considered ‘Good’.
In a release, the fire department said the exact date the burning will take place is not yet determined, as it is dependent on the daily ventilation index.
The Summerland Fire Department said the controlled burning will be supervised by the project manager, and could take place over several days.
Locals are advised that smoke may be present in the area, but that crews will make every attempt to burn in a non-intrusive manner.
