Health workers are providing COVID-19 vaccines to around 120 people each day in Summerland.

The vaccine clinic, at the Summerland Curling Club, is open five days a week and the number of people receiving the vaccines each day has been increasing.

The clinic is one of 48 operating across Interior Health. In the South Okanagan and Similkameen, there are clinics operating in Penticton, Oliver, Osoyoos, Keremeos and Princeton. Clinics opened on March 15.

The province has a rolling schedule for vaccines, based on age. People 90 and older were able to book appointments beginning March 8. As of Monday, March 22, vaccination appointments were open to B.C. residents 78 and older.

According to the provincial government, everyone in British Columbia is on track to receive the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine by the end of June. At present, high-risk populations are receiving the vaccines.

However, public health officer Bonnie Henry has said the pandemic precautions, such as physical distance and wearing masks, are still required as the vaccines take time to become effective and do not entirely remove the risk of infections.

British Columbia has had restrictions to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic for more than a year, beginning in mid-March, 2020.
