Summerland Secondary School students participated in a series of activities on Friday evening in an effort to raise money to help an orphanage in Tanzania.

The Get Active Marathon was organized by the Civics 11 class and was held at the school from 3 to 10 p.m.

Activities included basketball, capture the flag, dodgeball, volleyball, a walk and yoga.

The students set a goal of raising $3,000 for the orphanage. They raised $2,861.

Tula Thurlin, one of the student organizers of the event, said all the money raised will go directly to the orphanage, a cause the school has supported for many years.

The entire civics class participated in the event. Each of the students worked to raise $100 in pledges to help the orphanage.

During the evening, pizza was provided by Yaki’s and Prima Pizza, while water was donated by Summerland IGA and food was provided by Nesters Market.

In addition to the fundraising effort, a group of students from Summerland and Penticton will travel to Tanzania this summer to help at the orphanage. Three Summerland students are participating.

Lovlesh Anand, a Grade 11 student, will be at the orphanage in July for three weeks, helping with some of the construction.

“I feel people take our lifestyle here for granted,” he said. “I want to see how the other half lives, and I feel the need to give back.”
