A fundraising run on Sunday morning will raise money for cancer research.

The annual Terry Fox Run will be held at the Summerland Aquatic Centre on Sunday, Sept. 17.

Registration will begin at 10:15 a.m., with the run beginning at 11 a.m.

There are one-kilometre, three-kilometre and five-kilometre options for the participants.

“You can run, walk, ride your bike, bring your stroller or dog,” said Heather Cooke, one of the event organizers.

Cancer survivors and those who are coping with cancer are invited to join Terry’s Team for the event. These participants will wear red shirts for the run, in recognition of their past or present challenges.

The Summerland run is one of many across Canada in memory of Terry Fox.

In 1980, Fox, who had lost a leg to cancer, began a cross-country run to raise money and awareness for cancer research.

During the Marathon of Hope, Fox ran the equivalent of one marathon each day.

His cancer returned during the run and he eventually stopped near Thunder Bay, Ont.

Since his death in 1981, the Terry Fox Run has been held annually in communities across Canada.

Last year, the Terry Fox Foundation invested $22.9 million for cancer research.

The Summerland event raised an average of $136 per participant and among the top 10 per capita in British Columbia.

At least 200 people are expected to participate in this year’s run.
