Keremeos’ Grist Mill and Gardens has an aggressive summer schedule and thanks to generous grant support, it’s aiming to have the staff to take it on.

The Grist Mill recently received its annual grants from Service Canada and the Canadian Museums Association, but this year the support was much more than usual.

Instead of hiring between four or five summer students, with the funding it received, the Grist Mill is aiming to hire at least 10 students for the summer.

“These sorts of funding opportunities are always important to us, as they allow us to provide quality entry-level jobs,” said Chris Mathieson, the Grist Mill’s general manager. “After multiple challenging seasons due to forest fires, heat domes and the pandemic, we expect to have an exceptionally busy season, and these positions will make a huge difference as we work to expand our gardens, events and activity options on site.”

Between the two funding programs, student positions available include costumed site interpreters, event coordinators, garden/landscaping assistants, historical research assistants, kitchen help, and more.

To qualify for these full time positions, students must be aged 15 to 30 with plans to return to school in the fall.

“More students means more activity on site, more staff in costume, more events and more programming,” said Mathieson.

Many of students who get hired for the summer are local high school students, with some college and university students who return to the region also signing up.

Support for these positions comes from Service Canada’s Canada Summer Jobs program, as well as the Canadian Museums Association and Heritage Canada’s Young Canada Works program.

“We’d especially like to thank our Member of Parliament, Dan Albas, for his long-standing work in ensuring that heritage and tourism are funding priorities for both these Federal grant programs,” said Mathieson.

More information about these student positions, as well as all other employment opportunities at the Grist Mill, can be found at http://www.oldgristmill.ca/jobs/.
