One of Penticton’s dollar stores is set to close in April.

Don Hardy, owner of the Dollar Dollar Superstore, announced on social media that the store would be closing after selling the business.

“Thank you for supporting us the last 12 years. It’s bitter-sweet but it’s time,” Hardy’s post reads.

The post was filled with an outpouring of support from community members who expressed their sadness over the store’s impending closure, and congratulations to Hardy on his retirement.

The business, located 1301 Main Street in Penticton Plaza, had been listed by the Chamberlain Property Group for sale as early as 2022, for $489,000.

Chamberlain’s listing described it as a turnkey business opportunity as an independent store, founded in 2000 with its own loyalty program.

The Dollar Dollar had attempted to open up a second location at Riverside Plaza near Coyote Cruises in 2018, although that location closed within a couple of years.

Ahead of the store’s closure, everything in the Dollar Dollar is being sold off, including its fixtures.

There is no fixed date for when the store will officially close, but it is aimed for mid-April.

Although the Penticton store is independent, the announcement of the sale and closure comes at a time when franchise company Dollar Tree and Family Dollar recently announced their own closure of 1,000 stores in the United States.
