A Grade 12 student has received a $28,000 scholarship because of her humanitarian work.

Caitlin Shaw is one of this year’s recipients of the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award.

The award is given to students who are involved in voluntary humanitarian activities.

Shaw, who has epilepsy, has been involved in efforts to increase awareness about the disorder.

She and three fellow students formed the Epilepsy Awareness Squad to provide information about epilepsy.

Shaw was nominated for the award by Rick Papineau, the band teacher at the high school.

In addition, there was a screening process and Shaw had to attend an interview in Vancouver.

Shaw plans to study communications at Simon Fraser University after graduation.
