Good and Jonsson look at perfectionism

David Jonsson and Linnea Good are on tour this month promoting Good’s latest song of faith

The YouTube video of Linnea Good’s latest song of faith, The Underqualified Disciple, takes a humourous and light-hearted look at those who think they are not skilled enough to get involved.

“Moses was no speaker and Jacob was a bum! Sarah was too  senior, Jeremiah was too young...”

For Good, the song is a response to those who are afraid of answering a call to action because they think God’s standards are too high.

“You don’t have to be super qualified to make a difference in the world,” she said.

Instead, there is a place for those who do not feel qualified and who are feeling the crunch of twice the work and half the energy.

For those who try to appear perfect, Good said the results can be ironically damaging.

“Actually, when we’re trying to be perfect, the weird spinoff is we can become more critical of others,” she said. “It’s time for a break — a chance to celebrate and remember that God is in this with us.”

She and drummer/spouse David Jonsson are heading out on a 3 1/2 week circuit to help the Christian church expand its horizons and understand its purpose.

Friday’s first stop on the tour was Vanderhoof, starting them out on performances that will take them all the way to Winnipeg and back.

Their final concert of the 24-event itinerary will be at St Andrew’s United Church in Enderby on Oct. 23. It will be a benefit concert for MacKenzie Camp at Mabel Lake.

Good and Jonsson’s latest CDs, Swimmin’ Like a Bird and  Momentary Saints, were nominated Children’s and Gospel albums of the year by a variety of Canadian music associations. Good has been honoured by the North American Catholic Press and Canadian Church Press every year for her column on children’s spirituality with Dr. Nancy Reeves.
