Osler family has Summerland connection

Members of one of Canada’s famous families, the Osler family, owned orchard land in Summerland.

One of Canada’s famous families is the Osler family.

The family included Sir William Osler (medicine.) Sir Edmund Osler (finance, pictured at right,) Britton Osler (lawyer for Louis Riel trial,) Featherstone Osler (judge) and Summerland orchardist Frank Osler, pictured at left.

Frank Osler’s orchard was in Prairie Valley, on Morrow Avenue. He helped start our curling club. His son Ralph is listed on our cenotaph.

Sir Edmund Osler’s orchard was located west of brother Frank’s, at the corner of Rutherford and Prairie Valley roads. Just one of Edmund’s business ventures was President of the Dominion Bank (later TD).

In 1920 there were five Dominion Banks in British Columbia, two in Vancouver, one in Victoria and two in Summerland.
