Keremeos’ Grist Mill thanks seasonal workers for helping with the harvest

Grist Mill in Keremeos hosted around 100 migrant workers for a home-cooked meal to thank them for helping with this year’s harvest.

“Tonight, (Sept. 18) we had the honour of cooking dinner for some of the many migrant workers who come to the Similkameen to help with harvest,” said Grist Mill general manager Chris Mathieson.

“A home-cooked meal is always appreciated when you’re working as hard as these folks do, but we went a step further by giving them a meal that tasted like home—barbacoa (beef) and carnitas (pork) were on the menu tonight as about 100 workers came by, ate heartily and enjoyed each other’s company.”

The Grist Mill thanked to the Lower Similkameen Community Services Society, and to Natalia and David for helping pull this delightful event together.

Often meals are offered at Cawston Hall but this is the first time Grist Mill has been able to take part.

As Karen Mann pointed out, “We wouldn’t have the fresh produce we enjoy in the Okanagan without the out-of-country people.”
