On Sunday, the Friends of Summerland Ornamental Gardens celebrated their 25th anniversary at the Superintendent’s House at the Summerland Research and Development Centre.

The celebration included musical entertainment from Debi Johnson, Larry Crawford,  “The Garden Party Players” (Linnea Good) and the Musaic Vocal Ensemble (Tracy Stuchbery).

The Ornamental Gardens was the site of Summerland’s historic Farm Picnics.

At its peak in the 1930s, more than 3,500 people attended these picnics and more than 650 cars parked at the site.

With the help of Summerland’s Singers and Players and the Apple Valley Cruisers, that 1930s atmosphere was re-created on Sunday.

This year also marks the 100th Anniversary of the creation of the Ornamental Gardens and a special two day event celebration will take place, at this same site on July 16 and 17.

The title of the celebration is “100 Seasons in the Sun” and will include various musicians, artisans, children’s activities and a silent auction.
