Organizers of a one-day Fair Trade and Ethics Fair later this month hope to support and encourage sustainability and environmental awareness.
Kaitlyn Nightingale, a Grade 12 student at Summerland Secondary School, is organizing the May 27 event as an action project in her social justice class.
Nightingale said students from the school will be at the event, promoting a bylaw banning plastic bags.
Similar bans have been adopted in various communities in North America, including Victoria, B.C., Nightingale said.
“I’ve seen more and more of these bans over the last few years,” she said.
Other displays will include waste reduction and recycling initiatives. A compost demonstration from the Summerland Ornamental Gardens will also be included during the event.
Merchants and vendors with sustainable, ethically produced or environmentally sustainable products will showcase their wares at the fair.
Nightingale said consumer choices can make a significant difference.
“It’s such an easy thing for people to do, to change one shopping habit,” she said.
The fair will be held in Memorial Park on May 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The compost demonstration will be at 11 a.m.
