Nominations open for Penticton Chamber Business Excellence awards

The chamber has added a new code of conduct following 2021’s controversy

The Penticton and Wine Country Chamber of Commerce has opened nominations for this year’s Business Excellence Awards.

The awards, broken down into 10 categories including Business Leader of the Year and Young Business Person of the Year, will be presented in October during a gala awards event.

Nominations opened on July 27, and are open until Aug. 31. After they close, the selection committee will narrow down the semi-finalists and then the judges to come to a final decision.

The winners will be announced at a celebratory event on Oct. 22, which will have a to-be-announced theme for the evening.

This year, along with changes being made to the background systems for the nominations, the Chamber will be requiring all nominees and judges to follow the Chamber’s Code of Conduct.

That change was enacted following the controversy that erupted at the 2021 awards, where the Business Leader of the Year went to the owner of the Bad Tattoo brewery and restaurant, who had championed in speech and act the rejection of the government’s mandated vaccine passports for customers.

“We are trying to take in lessons learned from last year, and obviously there were some restrictions in what the board had available to them,” said Johnathan McGraw, the chamber’s president. “We always learn from the previous years.”

That Code of Conduct calls on businesses, among other things, to uphold the values of the local community as well as those of the chamber.
