Young athletes will gather at Powell Beach for a triathlon this weekend.
Organizers of the third annual Fun in the Sun Tri expect around 80 athletes between the ages of five and 18 will participate.
The triathlon is organized by Tri-Power Triathlon Club of Summerland.
While the event includes swimming, cycling and running, the distances are considerably shorter than Sprint or Ironman distances.
Melissa Berrisford of TriPower said the five-year-olds have a 25-metre swim, a one-kilometre bike ride and a 300-metre run on a grassy surface.
Participants between the ages of 16 and 18 will have a 600-metre swim, a 15-kilometre bike portion and a four-kilometre run. The cycling and running courses are in Trout Creek.
Participants have been preparing themselves for this event.
“Our older athletes have been doing spring training with us since April,” Berrisford said.
An adult event, following the same course as the 16- to 18-year-olds use, will also be offered.
The youngest participants will begin at 8:45 a.m. while the oldest youths and the adults will begin at 10:18 a.m.
Berrisford said volunteers are still needed, especially for road safety on the bike and run routes.
