Students in the Summerland Curling Club’s youth program have received head protectors, to reduce the risk of a head injury while curling.
The curling club asked Ice Halo, a Canadian maker of protective headgear, to provide headgear with a removable, washable cover at a reasonable price.
Each year, the curling club puts on around 25 classes for students from Grade 6 to Grade 12.
While head protectors are available, the curling club did not want headgear passed from one student to another, because of the possibility of spreading head lice.
This year, the Summerland club asked Ice Halo, a Canadian maker of protective headgear, if they could provide headgear with a removable, washable cover and at a reasonable price.
The Grade 9 and 10 students were the first to wear the new Ice Halos.
The core is a dense foam and the colourful fabric cover is removed and washed between uses.
As a reward for the idea, Ice Halo will be sponsoring the Summerland Junior Curling Bonspiel in March.
