Team name a tribute to railway

When the Junior B hockey season begins this fall, the Steam will take to the ice in Summerland.

Jonathan Bowman, the creator of the new hockey team, said the team name was chosen last week after several other names were suggested.

“We wanted something that would not only tie us to hockey but to the whole town,” he said.

Other names for the team included the Spartans, the Predators and the Jets, among others.

Bowman said the team’s logo will feature steam coming off the tracks.

A Summerland artist is now creating the logo.

Everyone who submitted a name for the team before the Jan. 24 deadline will receive two home game tickets.

Bowman said work is progressing for the fledgling team.

A head coach will soon be named.

The team will then hold its prospects camp April 8 to 10. This camp is open to all interested players of qualifying ages.

Some players will likely be signed at that time.

The main camp will be held Aug. 26 to 28.

The team’s first hockey season in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League will begin this fall.
