Summerland Steam win one, lose two in hockey action

The Summerland Steam lost on the road but won at home in recent Junior B hockey action.

On Sept. 25, the Steam travelled to Kelowna to face the Chiefs in a 7-2 loss.

Kelowna dominated the game with one unanswered goal in the first period and two power play goals in the second period to secure a solid lead.

After three more goals in the third period, two of them on power plays, the Steam finally scored at 6:56.

The goal was scored by Zak Cooper, with assists by Cody Swan and Brett Wilson.

The Chiefs responded with a power play goal.

Summerland’s final goal in that game was an unassisted goal by Tyson Conroy at 3:54.

On Friday, the Steam hosted the Osoyoos Coyotes, playing to a 6-0 shutout win.

Linden Gove scored a shorthanded goal at 8:53, assisted by Swan, to take the lead.

In the second period, Swan scored on a power play at 8:33, with assists by Ty Banser and Cody Loring.

Conroy added a power play goal at 1:46, with assists by Everett Scherger and Morey Babakaiff.

Liam McLaren scored with 51 seconds remaining in the period. Kyle Porritt and Loring assisted.

In the third period, Tristan Hewitt scored an unassisted goal at 18:19.

McLaren added a goal at 18:09, with assists by Hewitt and Loring.

On Saturday, the Steam faced the Posse in Princeton, losing in a 7-4 decision.

The Posse dominated the first period with three unanswered goals to take a solid lead.

In the second period, the Posse added a power play goal.

The Steam responded at 13:53 with a goal by Babakaiff, with assists by Sean Wilson and Brett Wilson.

Conroy added a power play goal at 7:09, with assists by Loring and Scherger.

In the third period, Gove scored for the Steam at 15:04, with assists by Swan and Scherger.

McLaren added a goal at 7:06, assisted by Allen and Babakaiff.

The Posse added three goals to secure the win. The first was a power play and the last was an empty net goal.

At present, the Steam are in second place in the Okanagan/Shuswap Conference:Okanagan Division in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

The team’s record is four wins and five losses in regular season play.

The next action for the Steam is on Friday, when Summerland hosts the Kelowna Chiefs. The game begins at 7:30 p.m.
