Summerland senior girls win at volleyball tournament

The Summerland Secondary School senior girls Rockets volleyball team came through in the clutch on the weekend.

The Summerland Secondary School senior girls Rockets volleyball team came through in the clutch on the weekend, earning a hard fought and exciting victory in the 12-team Revelstoke ‘Last Spike’ tournament.

The win was their first tournament victory of the season, and coach Steve Kentel was pleased with his team’s progress.

“We still have some work to do in many areas, but I am happy with this win and how the team gelled together this weekend,” Kentel said.

The Rockets started the tournament with a round robin record of three wins and two losses, losing very close games to Kelowna Christian and Aberdeen Hall of Kelowna.

In the playoff round however, the girls seemed to find another gear and they played with grit and determination in defeating both Kelowna Christian in the semi-final, and Rutland Secondary in the tournament final.

Kelowna Christian is currently the top-ranked A team in the province, and Rutland is a large AAAA school, so those wins were important victories against strong teams.

In the semi-final match, Summerland won the first game, and fought hard to win the close second game by a score of 30-28.

In the final match, there was no rest for the team as they had to fight tooth and nail again, in defeating Rutland 29-27 in the second game.

The team will now be participating in the prestigious George Elliott tournament this weekend, and then will be preparing in November for the South Zone playoffs, and the Okanagan Valley Championships.

The team’s number one goal however, is to qualify for the AA Provincial Tournament this year and bring home some hardware.
