Hockey players from Keremeos to Oliver teamed up in Summerland last weekend to represent the South Okanagan on the provincial stage.

The region’s U18 hockey team captured the BC Hockey provincial title, defeating their counterparts from Prince George 8-0 in the final game to wrap up the season and for many, their minor-hockey careers.

In a six-team tournament, the South Okanagan team battled against squads from Creston, Smithers, Summerland, Chetwynd and Prince George before being crowned champions.

Two players, in particular, Shelby Etty and Ethan Potash, have played together since they were six years old. The province-wide tournament — sanctioned by BC Hockey and overseen by Hockey Canada — marks the end of their time on the ice together, given their age.

Etty, the South Okanagan goaltender, only allowed seven total goals in six games played.

Provincial tournaments returned this month for the first time since 2019, amid COVID-19 cancellations.

Players from Keremeos and Oliver have merged to compete under BC Hockey’s South Okanagan umbrella since the 1990s.
