A girls soccer team with Summerland and Penticton players won the provincial championships on the weekend, with a close finish in the final game.
The U18 girls Pinnacles team, based in Penticton, won every game at the playoffs.
The championships featured the top eight teams from the province. Games were held in Penticton and Summerland on the weekend.
The Summerland players on the Pinnacles were Ella Weir and Arielle Jenkins, one of the team captains.
The team began on Thursday evening with a 5-1 win against the Richmond FC.
On Friday, the Pinnacles scored another decisive victory with a 6-1 win over the Surrey FC Tigers.
Saturday’s game, against Tsawwassen, was closer, with the Pinnacles earning a 3-2 win.
Jenkins said the game was not the strongest performance for the team.
The final game on Sunday, against the Nelson Selects, was the toughest action for the Pinnacles.
The score was 2-2 after 90 minutes of play.
The game went to two scoreless 15-minute overtime periods.
The win was decided in a final shootout, won on the fourth shot.
“It was definitely a very exciting game. It could have gone either way,” Jenkins said. “There were a lot of emotions.”
The lengthy game also left the players physically and mentally drained.
“By the end, I could tell our team was getting tired mentally,” Jenkins said.
There are no further championship competitions for the Pinnacles this year.
For Jenkins, the win also marks the end of her time as a player with the Pinnacles.
“It was a cool way to end my youth soccer career,” she said.
