The Penticton Vees are in the win column for the first time in 2022 after defeating the Merritt Centennials (2-26-1-0) 11-0 on Friday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre (SOEC).
Penticton (22-6-0-2) scored early and often during Friday’s showdown, headlined by Brett Moravec’s three-goal performance.
The 2,269 people in attendance watched the Vees take a whopping 63 shots on net before the team’s shutout victory was made official in the aftermath of the affair.
Moravec’s hat trick was completed late in the third period to give Penticton an 11-0 advantage.
Meanwhile, Mason Poolman scored his first-career B.C. Hockey League (BCHL) goal in the late stages of the middle frame.
In the crease, Vees goaltender Kaeden Lane registered the shutout win after facing a mere 13 shots on net. The game marked Lane’s first appearance since Dec. 13.
But it wasn’t just any ordinary win for the goaltender.
Lane pulled into a tie for fourth on the BCHL’s all-time shutout list with nine.
Penticton’s win on Friday night was the team’s first victory since New Year’s Eve when they defeated the West Kelowna Warriors 3-0 at the SOEC.
Fred Harbinson’s squad has only played four games since then after being sidelined in early January because of the league’s COVID-19 protocol.
The Vees will have some time off before starting a three-game set with the Wenatchee Wild (11-11-4-1) on Thursday night.
