The Penticton Vees are putting the fate of their own head coach on the line in the name of selling season tickets.

Head coach Fred Harbinson has been “suspended” by the team, so they say, until 30 new season tickets are purchased for the 2022-2023 B.C. Hockey League season.

Harbinson will be confined to a treadmill in front of the South Okanagan Events Centre on Wednesday, Aug. 31, and the only way he can go back to his coaching duties is if the team sells 30 new season tickets.

The Vees’ bench boss will step on the treadmill at 9 a.m., with prizes available for a select number of fans who buy their year-long stubs on that day.

People are invited to the arena Wednesday morning to “help free Fred” while spending time with players and staff.

Fans who purchase season tickets will also be entered into the Vees’ Vegas Giveaway, which will see one individual win a weekend giveaway for two to Las Vegas, Nevada.

The team says the trip includes airfare, two-night hotel accommodation and tickets to a Vegas Golden Knights game against the Anaheim Ducks on Feb. 12, 2023.

Next week, however, won’t be the first time the Vees’ front office has had some pre-season fun with Harbinson.

The reigning BCHL Coach of the Year and Fred Page Cup champion was able to escape Penticton’s iconic Peach during a ticketing campaign in 2019, after getting some purchasing help from the fans.
