A local figure skater did something earlier this month that no other athlete from his club has done in more than 10 years.

Micah Rodrigues, a figure skater from Penticton’s Glengarry SC, walked away from the 2023 BC/YT Super Series Sectional Championships in Coquitlam with a silver medal after his performance in the pre-juvenile men’s division.

It’s the first podium finish for the Glengarry SC at a provincial competition or sectional championship in more than a decade.

Rodrigues was one of four Penticton figure skaters sent to the Lower Mainland for the tournament from Nov. 10 to 13, with the others being Yuzuki Onishi, Noa Kan and Payten Ferguson.

While Onishi finished 13th in the pre-juvenile women’s division, Kan and Ferguson placed 40th and 53rd in their own categories, respectively.

Rodrigues’ 23.52-point silver-medal winning performance was a personal best, according to Glengarry SC head coach Trevor Buttenham.

The local coach says this month’s provincial tournament is one of the year’s most difficult.

A total of 25 skaters from the Glengarry SC are set to compete in West Kelowna this weekend for the 2022 Okanagan Interclub Competition.
